Instructionsĭownload and install DavMail however you would like. Basically, DavMail will pretend to be an IMAP, SMTP, POP3, CalDav, and LDAP server for your Exchange account, and will process any requests you send it and send them to your Exchange server. You simply run the daemon (unfortunately written in Java), and DavMail will act as a proxy between your computer and EWS. To run davmail, just type 'davmail' at the command line, or click its icon on the application menu. DavMail CardDav implementation was sponsored by French Defense / DGA through project Trustedbird. The Android and iPhone mail clients both support it, but I’m not reading all my mail on my phone… Thunderbird has a plugin for it, but it’s pretty ropey. So I decided to have a look at if any other mail clients supported Microsoft’s proprietary EWS format. Currently, Microsoft’s list of officially supported clients is the webclient (which is a nightmare when you have more than 1 account) and various versions of Outlook (not on Linux). However, with the University’s decision to disable IMAP, I would need to find a client that supports Microsoft’s Exchange format. This was quite a comfortable setup for me, as I could access my mail how I wanted and the whole thing was relatively seamless. Supported servers and service providers: - Exchange ActiveSync (EAS) Register or Log in. To mitigate push sync and the failing sync buttons, set an auto sync interval of 10, to auto sync your account every 10 minutes. This came as both a convenience as I could use any e-mail client I liked (in my case, mu4e), but also as a security measure as I could keep my mail even if my account were to be deleted. Lightning sync buttons do not trigger a sync of EAS calendars. I find this extremely frustrating, as I had previously setup mbsync to pull all my mail through IMAP and save them locally onto my Laptop. Remember to put your OWA signon in to the box at the bottom.The University of Kent has discussed disabling POP3 and IMAP support for their official Email system.
Once you get to the unable to detect your settings, manually edit the entries in the dialog as shown below.

Give the account setup wizard your mail address and your correct password and click next. To setup in Thunderbird 6 and latter do the following. I've been using Thunderbird for years so not sure how long before I miss it enough to return. I've had the same issue and recently started using Evolution which supports EWS. The instructions given for setting up mail accounts on the web site are only for version 2 of Thunderbird. Davmail and Exquilla are alternatives as well. And provide Your Name, Outlook Email Address, and Outlook Password. Create a new account in thunderbird from File, New, Existing Mail Account. The user names are Domainname/username and will be the same as you use for OWA. Now we have configured davmail with outlook exchange server we can use Thunderbird to send and receive mails. I have always been experiencing the problem described here and it is really painful. I am using Thunderbird + Davmail in order to access my MS exchange account. The server names for Thunderbird are simply localhost. Thunderbird endlessly redownloading messages with Davmail. Because you have put all he remote locations into DavMail, the server names you use are not the ones you would expect from the information provided by the Exchange administrator. What is different is the way you set up accounts in Thunderbird.

When I installed the software it was simple, painless and just worked. The real beauty of this is that it does it's magic from your computer so you don't need to go cap in hand to some system admin to ask them please do something, you simply install it an go from there. Evolution, Thunderbird, even the OSX Mail program can all benefit from this software because it make exchange 'just another mail server'. Until now we have been able (on some occasions) to convince the exchange server admin that turning on IMAP on exchange was a good idea, but for every success there have been probably a dozen failures and out of the box Exchange is totally inaccessible to standards compliant mail programs. How does this affect the situation of using Thunderbird with Exchange servers? It changes everything! DavMail is not new, and like Thunderbird is an open source project so there are no licences to buy. In the past few days I have stumbled upon some software that is designed to sit between you and the exchange server and act as an interpreter. That is the short answer I have been giving people for a long time. Thunderbird does not work natively with Exchange/OWA.
